It's always important to dig deeper and not rely on the words taken out of the context. Thanks Michael Koehler for reminding me about it. Anyway in this article The Verge says Google is actually concerned about our privacy when it comes to Gmail and it's the non-Gmail users they refer to for scanning their email.

Anyway, this whole NSA/Google /Spying thing creeps me out and I'm still thinking about leaving Gmail for something else - maybe an old-school IMAP with MailRoute for spam/virus protection? Haven't decided yet. I'm just not sure I trust Google anymore as much...
